The Book: Excel 2007 with Excel Master

Based on and written for Excel 2007

This resource comprises three parts

Part 1: Introduction
Part 2: Data Analysis
Part 3: Decision Making

Chapter one comprises a series of inputs/exercises that encourages the reader to use a series of functions and formulae in order to enable them to move to the next steps in the following chapters. This chapter is the foundation of the rest of the book, especially for the newcomer to Excel.

The book assumes that the reader will be using Excel in order to follow and work through the exercises and examples being discussed.

As for the rest of the book, some imaginary and lots of real and realistic data will be used throughout. Both small and large databases of a variety of data such as corporate data and together with a wide variety of other statistical data sets are also included where appropriate.

The book uses screenshots as part of the development of the work of each chapter. This means that the reader can see in detail exactly what is being done and discussed: this will enhance understanding and application.

Links to articles and other materials are also provided to illustrate how to derive and analyse information and data under a wide range of headings.

To use this page, read the summaries below or go straight to the menu on the left hand side of the page to see the chapter contents in detail or to see some of the more advanced and specialist materials you will find here and/or in the book.

Database Functions

This is a bonus resource that demonstrates the use of some of Excel 2007's built in database functions. You will see with this article and examples that these functions are extremely powerful for anyone who uses tables made up of several columns and potentially many rows when you need to specifiy two or more criteria for analysis.

Manpower Planning

This is a fascinating piece of work that I have developed for Dr Tony Miller,s a manpower planning expert. The modelling that this resource relates to is used by HR and Mapower Planners in organ isations to map out their needs for the future taking into account a complex array of variables. In these materials, the size of the problem has been limited to make it manageable and interesting.

Good University Guide Analysis

On an ongoing basis now, newspapers like The Times publish tables of the best of British Universities: a table of the best and the least best from number one to number 114. What you will see here is the league table and the regression analysis we have carried out on that. What the analysis reveals, essentially, is how the rankings were arrived at and therefore what you would be getting from the University you choose to go to.
